    title:
    Tags
    body:

Tags within the LiveConnect platform are bound to a particular Application, and members can be given different permissions to create and/or apply them. Tags are not freely created by all members, but instead are applied from a custom list. An Application owner or admin can define which members of the Application have the ability to create and/or apply Tags within the Application. For example, an Application owner might create a set of category like Tags within an Application (Financial Services, Retail, etc) and allow all authors within the Application to apply their own tags, in effect categorizing their Posts. Alternately, an Application owner might use Tags to represent an internal workflow (submitted, in development, in testing, released) and allow only a tiny set of members to apply the Tags.

Application owners and admins can manage the Tags available in the Application via the 'settings' tab, in a similar manner to managing Post Types.

Ok, controlling tags is good.. it avoids chaos and allows organization... but two questions...

      1. How do users suggest new tags
      2. Can you sort and/or view by tags? -- Ideally all of your Views should be made sortable by one or more fields/attributes.... e.g, View by TOPIC (a capability you don't yet have.. I might be able to do this with tags); sort by most recent. Or view by Topic and sort by author within topic...

1 - The permission to create and/or apply tags can be set per Hive, so though there is no real mechanism in place for users to suggest new Tags, Tags can often be created by multiple users per Hive.

2 - In a Hive that contains Tags, a sort-by-tags panel will appear when viewing Posts. At the community level, we don't currently show a commmunity-wide Tag cloud due to some permissions trickiness we're still working on. However, as a community admin you can already create your own Tag (topic/category) links that will roll-up Posts by Tag across the entire community. A link to http://[name].hivelive.com/posts?tags=retail will show all Posts in the community with the tag "retail."

The primary use case described above is very much a topic or category model. A community admin might define a dozen or so category tags, and include them in all of the template Hives for a community. As builders create Hives from those templates, and authors begin posting content, everyone will have the same category set available to them. Builders can add additional Tags in their own Hives if necessary.

Can certain content and/or notifications be suggested/sent to members of a certain group (ie: west coast cycles group should receive notifications where there is new content tagged as "California" or "Oregon")?  (silly example, but nonetheless...)  And, if possible, is this true throughout the community, or only in a certain Hive?  (Would be neat if in profile one could look through various tags throughout the community and select topics of interest... as such, be recommended to a Hive or Group, and as such, send a request to join... something to add visibility to people/content/options within a potentially complex community.)

      Hi Ellen,

Good question. The short answer is no, it's not currently possible to subscribe to a tag (either in a Group or as a Member). However, we are currently working on some features that set the stage for this functionality, and it is definitely on the roadmap. The ability for members to self select a bit more easily by groups, topics, etc. would be very helpful indeed.

Sorry if this is redundant... can a user search by tags? ie: to find a document or thread that is on a certain topic, put in term and if that term is in the tag, and he has priviledges to see those hives, he finds the content? Bristol Meyers Squibb is interested in this idea, and we have a call with them this morning, thus curious.

Not currently, though it's definitely on the roadmap. FWIW, the reason we don't do this yet has to do with the need to get the permissions right. In other words, you shouldn't be able to search on (or even be aware of) Tags on Posts that you don't have permission to see. Thus, our TagClouds and TagSearching need to be appropriately permissioned, and version 1 of Tags simply doesn't yet include that functionality.

Since it's now five months since the last comment on this thread, I was wondering if there have been any changes to how a user might search tags across the entire community.  Have there been any?  Or is the answer still for the administrator to tag the various hives.

There haven't been any changes to tags since the last update here, though enhancing the existing Tagging model has moved from "on the roadmap" to "currently designing."
